Clayoquot Forest Communities Program is building a model of a conservation economy based on the principle of "Hishuk ish' tsawalk," a Nuu-chah-nulth phrase meaning "everything is one and interconnected."
British Columbia's Nuu-chah-nulth Central Region Management Board and Ecotrust Canada are partners in the Clayoquot Forest Communities Program. The program's seven member communities are rich in culture, biodiversity and natural resources. Community leaders are exploring initiatives that will lead to a revitalized forest industry in this area of coastal temperate rain forest.
Value-added forestry opportunities exist in locally milled and salvaged timber, hand-crafted log home building, custom cutting, portable commercial sawmilling, millwork and cabinetry operations, and First Nations arts and crafts.
With expertise in business, financial management and community economic development, partners are working to develop a dynamic and creative economy for Clayoquot, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve region that exemplifies the idea that people and the environment can both co-exist and thrive.
