The Eastern Ontario Model Forest (EOMF) encompasses approximately 1.5 million hectares which includes forests dominated by a mix of hardwoods and softwoods, urban and rural communities, agricultural and aboriginal lands, and numerous watersheds. Ours is primarily a settled landscape with a population of more than one million people. Over 90 per cent of the land is privately owned. We are located in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence forest region.. Incorporated in 1992, the EOMF has had a tremendous influence on the progress of conservation related work in eastern Ontario by championing the concepts of partnership, consensus and community engagement. Much of this success can be attributed to our embrace of Naturalized Knowledge Systems principles, as embodied in the Haudenosaunee culture. The principles of respect, equity and empowerment are considered fundamental in nurturing effective and enduring partnerships.
Core activities include promoting sustainable forest management and investigating economic opportunities for forest-based communities, woodlot owners, and industry. Within this context, we are exploring options for new bioproducts using low-grade wood fibre, examining opportunities for carbon credits for private landowners, moving forward with affordable forest and Chain of Custody certification, addressing concerns surrounding species at risk and invasive species, and designing a framework for better recognizing the contributions that landowners are making in providing ecological goods and services.
