Indonesian delegation visits Eastern Ontario Model Forest

As part of a 2-year project to establish a new model forest in the Special Province of Yogyakarta, Indonesia, a delegation of government officials, including the Secretary to the Director General of Watershed Protection and the Head of the Yogyakarta Forest Service traveled to Canada in August 2015. The objective of the trip was to introduce the delegates to the working partnerships within a Canadian model forest, sustainable forestry practices and local production of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) such as maple syrup, using the Eastern Ontario Model Forest (EOMF) as an example. The EOMF hosted the delegation by providing several tours within their model forest area. The tours were designed to highlight how the EOMF has helped improve sustainability on private, county and crown forest landscapes, assist in forest certification and support growth in the local forest industry. EOMF General Manager, Wade Knight and their Forest Certification Coordinator, Scott Davis hosted the tours. "It was great to be able to show the Indonesian delegation our model forest partnerships in action and how we work with all stakeholders to ensure sustainability of the forest and of livelihoods", states Wade.

Work Continues to Develop MF in Indonesia

In 2014, the Canadian Model Forest Network (CMFN) began a two-year project to help the Government of Indonesia establish a new model forest area and organization in the Special Province of Yogyakarta, on the Island of Java, Indonesia. The project is funded in part by Canada's Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD). Following successful introductory workshops in Indonesia in October 2014, members of the CMFN returned again to Yogyakarta in May 2015 to work with local stakeholders, researchers and several levels of government to identify the main components needed to establish a model forest organization. Almost 60 people attended, demonstrating the high level of interest in the model forest concept.

Exciting Changes at the Canadian Model Forest Network

The Canadian Model Forest Network (CMFN) is pleased to announce that Dr. Brian Kotak has accepted the position of General Manager of the CMFN. While maintaining his responsibilities as General Manager of the Manitoba Model Forest, Brian will assist the CMFN Board in preparing for a strong future. To facilitate this process, the CMFN has established a Succession Committee, which will evaluate the current landscape as well as our changing member and partner needs. The CMFN and all of our member sites are in an exciting phase of transition. While this transition has just begun, we look forward to a long and bright future.

Biomass Heating & Electricity Production: A Guide for Rural Communities in Canada

Canada is a resource rich country, supporting a wealth of renewable and non-renewable resource industries. Canadians are stewards to a large portion of the world’s temperate and boreal forests. These forests provide a range of ecological services: from water purification and storage, erosion and flood control and air quality protection, to the provision of wildlife habitat. Forests also play a critical role in climate change mitigation, with Canadian forests sequestering an estimated 95 billion tonnes of carbon. Forests provide a range of economic values: from traditional forest products, recreational values and trapping, to the potential for energy production.
